What do you need for Backpacking on a Dessert? |
Travel Info My girlfriend and I are going backpacking this weeking to Joshua Tree. I have never done it before, so I would like to know what are the things you need for it and if you know some good pointers. Also, what is is that you can do (allowed) and what you cant do? Thanks Travel Tips Are you going on a sundae? J/K... Make sure you pack plenty of water. Backpacking through a desert, you're a brave soul.. Both of you! Others If you're going to backpack on a dessert, you need to be mighty small. Either that, or you need a mighty big dessert. I have been to J Tree a bunch of times. You picked what a good time of year, but this weekend will be crowded. How long are you going for? You'll need the obvious basics (tent, sleeping bags/pads, first aid kit, hat, sunglasses, warm layer, map & compass (and know how to use them or they're worthless), stove, pot, food, and about a gallon of water per person per day). Water is about 8 pounds per gallon. If you're going over night, it's recommended to carry or cache 2 gallons each. Open fires are not permitted in the back country. You'll need a backcountry permit. There are areas that are only for day-use and can not be camped in overnight. Check with the Visitor Center or a Park Ranger. Go here for more specifics: www.nps.gov/jotr It is a BEAUTIFUL park and you'll have a great time if you plan properly. Good Luck!! If I can help more, shoot me an email. I've never backpacked on a dessert before. But if I could, I would chose cholate fudge brownies! We went rock climbing at Josh Tree 20 years ago. It was extremely hot during the day and very cold at night. So make sure you bring a jacket with you! |
