Booking A Holiday/Vacation for the FIRST time- What do I need to do? |
Travel Info Booking A Holiday/Vacation for the FIRST time- What do I need to do? Travel Tips There are 2 things that we always do when booking our vacations: 1) arrival and departure times with the least number of stops possible, and 2) hotel location. It really matters how much homework you do on the internet before your trip. We try to get to our destination as early as possible so that we have all day to enjoy (as opposed to booking a cheap flight that gets you there at 10PM and all you do is go to sleep and really waste your first day of vacation). The hotel location is probably the most important thing to research, because you want to do as little driving as possible and, if at all possible, be within walking distance of most attractions or close enough that you won't spend all your money in taxis. If you save a few dollars by staying at a hotel not near the main attractions, you will waste time moving around and money by having to rent a car. We have also found out that the hotel's and airline's web sites offer the same "discounted" prices as do travel sites like Expedia or Orbitz. The main difference is that Expedia and Orbitz require you to pay the whole trip right away and then they'll reimburse you if you have to cancel. If you go directly with the hotel or airline you may not need to pay all at once, so you are not out a lot of money before even starting your vacation. Make sure you are clear about any documents you may need for entry into the country e.g.visa. You must have a valid passport that is valid for 6 months after your return date. Check to see if there are any health requirements e.g. vaccinations, malaria tablets. You need to show proof for some countries. Find out if water is drinkable in the country you're going to. Currency is important. Make sure you have travel insurance and that it covers you adequately for any watersports, golf or wintersports activities. Don't drink alcohol in the plane if you're going long haul. 1 alcoholic drink in the air equals 3 on the ground. It can contribute to jetlag as well. Ensure you bring any medications and mosquito repellent you need. Check the departure airport website for EU security rules on items banned from hand luggage. Have a good time. |
