This is one of the most frequently asked questions on here. No you don't need a passport but it is highly likely you will need some form of photographic ID.

A passport is perfect for this. You need to check with your airline to see what their ID requirements are but to be on the safe side take your passport.

It may feel like a foreign land, yet New Jersey is part of the USA. Best not ask them in person, you might get "relocated"!

What Jersey are you talking about? New Jersey US, or Jersey Channel Islands.

Jersey - Channel Islands
If you are in the UK and want to visit Jersey, Channel Islands then you will not need a passport but some form of photo ID may be advisable especially at boarding on mainland UK. If you are outside the UK then a passport and perhaps a visa will be needed as you will probably land in London and transit from there.

New Jersey - US
The same applies to the US state of New Jersey, inside the US no passport, outside the US passport and perhaps visa.

CHICAGO (Orbitz) -- Travelers will need passports to enter or re-enter the United States by air from the Caribbean, Mexico, Bermuda or Canada beginning Tuesday.

The new rule, which takes effect January 23, 2007, affects U.S. citizens and all other air travelers.

Travelers arriving by land or sea may be required to present passports or other government-approved documents by January 1, 2008.

U.S. citizens returning from Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands will not need to show passports.

Authorities expect a big increase in passport requests due to the rule change, so travelers without valid passports are encouraged to allow plenty of time to obtain them.

It typically takes about six weeks to get a passport after applying, or two weeks for more expensive, expedited service through the Passport Services Office.

About 70 million U.S. citizens -- one-fourth of eligible travelers -- currently hold valid passports.
