What is the process of getting a first time passport and will I need my birth certificate? |
Travel Info What is the process of getting a first time passport and will I need my birth certificate? Travel Tips You can get them at certain USPS locations. I think a birth certificated is required. You'll need 2 passport photos. Make sure you allow 5 weeks for them to process the application. The price for standard service is now around $165.00 to $185.00, depending on your age. It is more if you must expedite the application. Others You will need your birth certificate. Check the with the health department in the county you were born and they will give you the details - typically they require you to come in or to fax over information on your birthdate, parents names, SSN etc - it varies by county. Then you'll need two small "passport" size photos - you can get these just about anywhere. You will also need a photo ID (your driver's license for example) Also, because of the new passport rules for Mexico, Canada, and the Caribbean, it's taking quite a while for passports to get processed. You'll want to hop to it if you're travelling this summer and I would highly recommend that you pay to expedite it. This can be done at the post office or the county clerk's office in your county. If you are getting a passport in a name other than your birth name (if you're married, for example), you'll also want to take a copy of the marriage license. Have a good trip! http://travel.state.gov/passport/passpor... You need to go to one of the passport processing locations in person the first time you get a US Passport. You need to have with you, 2 pieces of ID (including Birth Certificate), and you want to have two copies of a passport photo w/you. Many camera stores will do the photos for about $15. You fill out a form, hand over the photos and IDs There is more info on the US Gov site: http://travel.state.gov/passport/passpor... This includes what documentation you'll fill out, where you can process application, etc. Because the Passport question is different now than in the pre 9/11 world, requirements have changed. The easiest way to do this is through the post office. They even have a passport page on their website. http://www.usps.com/passport/ the application is there, as well as the required documentation. as far as passport photos, I tried the photo machine in the mall, don't do it. I actually took mine and my wife's with our digital camera, printed them myself, within the size and general appearance guidelines (Don't smile and don't dress up, plain background - Look everyday) no problem. If you need yours expedited, it will cost extra, but our showed up in about 4 weeks. Hope this helps! Personal experience |
