My mother's passport will go out of date next year?

we are planning to travel to Florida next year and my mother has has sent away for a new 10 year passport she will get a biometric passport back what information does a biometric passport hold and what does a biometric passport look like she will get her new passport in about 2 weeks. We are in the Uk.
