You do not have to put it in a bag, you can check it without. I have done that a few times and it faired quite well. Tip: If they tell you that you're being selected for additional search, when handing over bags, hand the stroller last. When that happened to me, the guy told me I made a good choice by doing so. They hand inspect the last piece of check luggage. With it being the stroller, nobody digging through your suitcase.
