So call a few days in advance and schedule it. It's cheap to get your picture done at drug stores, make sure you have 2 TWO copies of the picture. Places that advertise doing the picture for you usually know what they are doing. You can save yourself time by filling out the passport application online, you have to print it out and bring it with you to your appointment but then you aren't sitting at the post office filling out all these forms. You must have the state issued birth certificate with the raised/embossed seal on it. And a photo id. The clerk will keep your application and birth certificate. The birth certificate and passport come in the mail in about 6-8 weeks. Make sure you get payment instructions, sometimes they require two separate checks or won't take credit card...their are a few separate fees. The info in the first answer is outdated. It is currently taking 3 to 4 months for a US passport (from the date you mail the application to the date you receive the passport). You can reduce the time to about a month by paying the extra $60 expediting fee. US citizens still need a passport to travel to Great Britain. I recommend that you go to the post office and take your photo there, give them your information they request they will then send it to Sacramento, Ca. and authenticate it there and register your passport number then forward it to Las Angele's, Ca. and they will send it to you after they register your passport also.
