Shanghai! Please help me with a checklist for traveling to Shanghai!? |
Travel Info hello. First time going out of state, out of country ! I am going to shanghai, china in the summer for a month. I already have plane ticket, and passport. How long does visa take? i have three weeks before Im susposed to leave. Do i need shots? How much money should I bring? The conversion is about 7-8 dollars there =1USD here. How are the prices for items there? Is it a safe place, is it really that hot (people say its like a suana 24-7). ARe there fun things to do there? Any cool clubs or hang out spots? What about phone? Will I be able to use my phone there? if not, how can I talk to people here? Will I need to unlock my phone? Is there infacstructure different? How will I be able to use my electronics if the outlet is different? What must I buy? If I bring my laptop there, will there be wireless internet there? Sorry for the many questions. Any help would be great!!!! Travel Tips Hi! You will really enjoy Shanghai - it's a vibrant city that has the best of the old, historic neighborhoods and the coolest new places as well. Visas can take up to a month to get; I would go to your local Chinese embassy to get yours asap! Prices are pretty good here (not as good as Beijing or Shenzhen), but if you can charge to a credit card you will get the best exchange rate. At many shops you can bargain, especially in the pearl market and other large markets. Don't ever take the first price - haggle down by at least 50% from their first price, if not lower. It can be hot, so be sure to bring comfortable clothes. Tank tops and t-shirts are OK during the day, but many nicer restaurants and clubs require nicer clothes in the evening. Coolest places to hang out - I like the Bund area; M on the Bund is a great restaurant with nice views of the river (kind of pricey, however). Your phone usage - depends on your phone and service. I have Cingular and it works over here with no issue, but I also have a BlackBerry with worldwide access. Call your wireless provider before you leave and ask them to unlock it for China use, just in case. The outlet is definitely different, so you will need to get an adapter. Radio Shack has lots of options, so you might go there before you leave. There are many places that do have wireless internet, like coffee shops and cafes, and most hotels (at least in the lobby). The hotel I am in now (Hua Ting) has wireless in the lobby and wired in the rooms. It is safe here, just be sure to carry a card with you with the address of your hotel written on it in Chinese, as the cab drivers usually do not speak any english. Before you head out for the day, ask the concierge at your hotel to write down your destinations in Chinese for the cab drivers so you won't be held up trying to explain where you are going. I have never gotten shots before coming to China; however, I have usually been in big cities where there is not much to worry about. If you are heading out into the rural areas where you will be in proximity of livestock you might consider some shots like hepatitis. But frankly, if you are generally healthy you shouldn't have a problem. If you have asthma or allergies, the pollution in the cities can drive you nuts sometimes, so bring your Claritin or Benadryl with you. Enjoy Shanghai - it is truly a magical place! |
