Any tips for a cross-country move?

Travel Info
I am friends with a couple who are moving from Minnesota to Boston. Do you have any tips on how to make this cheaper? They are looking into Budget Truck and U-Haul renting and movers, etc, but everything is SO expensive? I could use some advice on how they can cut costs! Thanks!

Travel Tips
I have moved more times than I can count thanks to my first husband being in the military. The best advice, sell as much as possible before you move. There is plenty of stuff as you unpack you will find you haven't used or don't really need. Redecorating as needed in a final destination will prove to minimize accumulation of stuff and not feel like you are selecting a new home/apartment based on how to fit in all your stuff. By getting rid of stuff now, you move will cost less.

Check into what homeowners will cover during a move if things break. Keep in mind, expensive electronics don't get a high payout because new and improved models come out so quickly. If your insurance doesn't cover much, definitely hire a reputable mover. Ask for references and call them. Don't just assume you need the movers extra insurance. Read the policy and what it covers. Move stuff you can't live without if broken or lost yourself. Let movers pack replaceable heirlooms, if you pack it and it breaks, you are likely responsible. Write down the serial numbers of all electronics and take pictures of big ticket items to prove you owned them and the condition it was in. If you save receipts for expensive things, move them yourself so you have proof of purchase if necessary.

Finally, make sure you know if the truck travels even if it is not full. Some companies will hold the truck to fill it with someone else's stuff for a different move. It is harder to get your stuff back if it is misdelivered and you will wait longer for delivery in most cases.

Even if self move is cheaper, consider if it is really worth the work, hassle and back breaking lifting. If you choose to move your own things, speak to a doctor or physical trainer about the proper way to lift and leverage heavier items so you don't really hurt yourself. Keep toilet paper and paper towels readily available for when you arrive.

Good luck.
