Any good activities/ways to keep kids occupied on long car trip? |
Travel Info kids are 4 & 6. looking for ways to entertain them during long car trip from nebraska to the mountains in oklahoma??? we have a nintendo gameboy, leapster, leapfrog and some color books. any other ideas??? Travel Tips Go Fish cards and other card games. They can usually play with each other for these, or even you can join in. :) Blank paper -- you can ask them to draw what they've seen so far on the drive, or what they're excited to see when they get there. Those felt boards that have white spaces for kids to color in are excellent, especially the bigger ones. And the best part about them is they're pretty cheap. There's also the "License Plate Game", where the kids look for license plates from every state. Here's a printable pageso they can keep track of what states they've seen. http://www.momsminivan.com/license-plate... The "Straight Face Game" is also fun -- basically, one kid is "it" and someone picks a weird phrase for him to say (ie, my monkey's moustache). Then, the rest of you ask him silly questions (like, What's your favorite breakfast food?) and he can only answer by saying that phrase. If he laughs, it's someone else's turn to be it. It's a silly, simple game, but in my experience, kids usually love it. Car Bingo is also fun: http://www.momsminivan.com/printables.ht... That website also has links to other fun car games you can play. I also highly recommend stopping at a Burger King or McDonalds for lunches, if you can. They have playplaces where the kids can play for a while and burn off extra energy. A portable DVD player is also always a good investment for trips with kids. Others the best thing i ever bought my kids for long journeys is 2 dvd players and of couse some headphones so they don't argue over each others dvd playing too loud choice no. 1 - nice soothing music set them to slumber. choice no.2 - portable dvd player... Portable DVD player... BigM, this is also a great time to connect with the kids in some form of communication. Sometimes, as you know, kids don't want to talk; however, simple conversations about their likes, dislikes, what they hope to do in Nebraska (and asking them about the best thing that happened to them while they were in school this passed year) will show them that you are not merely passing them off to the video games, but actively listening to what they think are important to them. Even if this only lasts for a few moments a day during a one or two day trip can have a lasting impression upon their image of you after they are older. It will also make them feel important during your family road trip for those same few moments. This is merely a suggestion, and whether this is considered or not has no bearing on you as a parent, adult, or person. Best of luck and stay safe on the road trip. I hate to say this, but the best long trip I had with small children was with a DVD player and some cartoons. I hate to say it because I don't like the idea of the kids watching TV when they should be enjoying the trip. I wonder if they will then grow up and not be able to just enjoy the ride later in life. I don't know. However, I've taken the trip between Nebraska and Oklahoma, and frankly, there's nothing much to see! LOL Portable DVD player seemed to keep them occupied for hours. Hi Sista!, Hmmm, I will take it in a more educated way, before the trip, go thru with the kids on the route, what they will expect to see, eg. mountains, trees, special plants. animals etc etc, let them outline the route, discuss with them on what to expect for lunch and dinner and also the stoppage location and time. Kind of letting them involve in it. Let them imagine and get excited over it. It will bring more interest to them as they will look out for the real things and places while on the way. And most importantly, teach them about safety ya, the do and don't. Other than the education part, the usual gameboy, DVD, and whatever electronic gadgets will be perfect. It is also a time to have good family communication, love and cohesiveness in a different atmosphere.. So, in a way, you will have an education trip plus a family holiday for the kids. Hey.. enjoy ya. It's going to be tiring, but with the joy of Love, you will be energized and happy yeah! Happy holiday! |
