Traveling from St. Pete, FL to New Jersey/New York (Need Help)? |
Travel Info Im 18 years old, I have a budget of about 250 dollars. Im planning on driving from St. Petersburg Florida to Seacocus(?) New Jersey where Im going to meet up with a friend who is flying from st. pete to Jersey. Im planning on sleeping in my car etc. and my diet is going to consist of McDonalds dollar menu. I really need help on directions and how to get from st. pete to Northern Jersey. I drive a ford escort (1999 model), so I also need help configuring my gasoline expenses. I really need help on this, it would be absolutely wonderful if someone could help me out. My email is akacardboardrkm@yahoo.com... if you prefer sending me an E-mail instead of anwsering my question here. Any help is greatly appreciated. p.s. I only plan on staying up there for a good four days or so. Give or take a few : ) Travel Tips To get there, just take I-4 to Daytona and connect to I-95 and take it straight north. I'm guessing that you're looking at a 1250 mile trip one-way, and If, and this is a big if, your vehicle gets 25 mpg, then you're looking at using 50 gallons of gas each way, thus a minimum of 100 gallons for the trip. If you have a $3.00 price per gallon average, you are $50.00 SHORT on money before you leave...and this doesn't count your McDonald's diet or anything else. The lower you can keep your speed, the better your gas mileage...and the less stress on your car's engine..but can can't squeeze that many miles of gasoline out of your $250.00. But, if that is your budget just to get there, then you should be ok. Tip #1: take a cooler with lots of drinks (lots of water); and make some sandwiches for the first day's diet. Stay away from sugar snacks as they will give you some initial energy, but then you can crash land real fast from it...it's not worth falling asleep at the wheel and killing yourself. Tip #2: Make sure you stay in rest areas that are marked for police patrols...or better yet, go on the web and find some really cheap motel. Better to spend $40-50 for a good night's sleep and avoid meeting someone you really don't want to know. Tip #3: Get another friend with $250 to go with you and split the cost. Question: how many miles are on your car? Escorts are noted for needing an engine timing belt (or sometimes called a timing chain) no later than 90,000 miles. I'm only guessing that an 8 year old car can very easily have this many miles on it, so if you haven't had this repair already made, you're taking a very risky trip. I know you're not going to like reading this, but if you only have the $250.00 for the entire trip and your car's not prepared for a trip of that length, stay home and have your friend bring you back a souvenir. Others Victor, it's going to be very difficult for you to get up there and back with $250 just for gasoline. I just drove to Sarasota and back from Maryland, and although I was driving a V6, I spent more than $360 in gas. Figure out how many highway miles per gallon your car gets before you decide to drive, because you probably don't want to be stuck on your way back with no money and no gas! Also, sometimes sites like Travelzoo or Spirit Airlines or Southwest have discount and/or last-minute fares, and it may be cheaper to do that! Good luck! Take I-4 out of Tampa to I-95, head north on 95 and stop when you get to Jersey. |
