How should I move my stuff? Uhaul or UPS? |
Travel Info I need to move my stuff from Wisconsin back to California soon. I currently live in a furnished studio apartment, so the things I will be moving include my personal belongings (clothes, books, amplifier, bass guitar, etc), my kitchen items (utensils, microwave, microwave oven, etc), some furniture (bookshelf, etc), and stuff a normal college student would normally have. Now, I don't have a car, so I was planning to rent a Uhaul/Penske truck to move all my stuff back to California. Looking it over, it would cost probably around $1800 to do this, including gas and whatnot. Shipping my things back could be another option (and consequently, flying back), but I worry about the odd things I'd have to send back...a bass guitar, a softball bat, an amplifier, tennis racquets, my pyrex tupperware, etc, stuff that could easily break on the way back... Which would be the better option? I figure I can drive back in around 3-4 days, but would it really be cost efficient to drive or ship? Travel Tips I have no idea what Penske location you talked to, but if you book online and get AAA it is very cheap. I paid about $300 for a 26' diesel truck from Austin to Pasadena CA in January. Gas and hotel added another $500, so that quote is too high. If you don't have any furniture, why not just rent a van from Budget, Hertz or Avis , not a Penske truck? That would be cheaper yet. UPS will only ship up to 70#, some of your items may not survive the trip and it would be more expensive. We drove 1.5 days on our 1,500 mile trip with a hotel in El Paso after closing on our home in the morning. Others it would be more cost effective to rent a u-haul than to ups the stuff back. the packing materials that you would need to make sure that your valuables are not destroyed by delivery drivers makes that idea in it's self expensive. It depends on how much it weighs because UPS charges by the weight and size of the box. It's kinda expensive. It would be most convenient though. Consider only packing what you really want and sell the rest. |
