Can you tell me the difference between a passport and a visa?

Travel Info
Are they both the same thing or different?

I know I need to passport to travel internationally, but some countries say I need a visa. Can someone tell me the difference between the two.

Hi,

a passport is a document, issued by your own government which serves to identify you and to 'request' that the holder (you) be allowed access to other countries.

This document will always be required before you can enter 'foreign' countries.

A visa is permission (usually given as a 'stamp' in your passport) which allows you access to a particular country. This will be issued by the government of the country you wish to visit. These are often limited to a single journey, but can be 'multiple entry' permissions.

I, as a British citizen, for example, need both a vaild passport AND a visa to gain entry into the USA whenever I visit. Many countries do not have this requirement, some do.

Most visas need to be applied for BEFORE you plan to visit a country that has this requirement. Normally you would apply for a visa through the embassy of the country you plan to visit in your own country. Some countries have a 'border visa' policy, which means it is possible (though sometimes expensive-bribes and so on...) to obtain entry at a border crossing immediately (or at least after the financial arrangements have been settled)

Hope that helps,

Yes, passport is something issued by your country. It is somethin you need, 2 travel out of ur country. Whereas visa is like an entry permit. Meaning if u want 2 travel to the US from india, u will need 2 apply for a visa to enter US. N visas r of different kinds depending on how long u want to or rather the country will let u stay there. U can go to a country on tourist visa (for a short term) or get a resident visa to work there. Hope this helps!
They're 2 different things. Your passport will allow you to travel outside of your country, it will not necessarily allow you to enter the country you're traveling to. And that's when the visa gets the job done. Let's say you're a citizen of X land and with a passport you could travel to Y which is your neighbor or something and you do not need a visa for that. However if you want to go to Z you'll need a current visa on your passport in order to get in there...So in short, a passport is not always enough in order to travel somewhere. In most cases you'll get a passport first and then get a visa from the embassy of the country you're visiting...
A passport is a travel document issued by a national government that usually identifies the bearer as a national of the issuing state and requests that the bearer be permitted to enter and pass through other countries.
While, visa is a document giving an individual permission to request entrance to a country.
Your country issues you your passport. But visas will have to be issued by the countries you intend to visit. Not every country requires a visa to enter.
