Where does valuables go when you lose your storage space>? |
Travel Info When you rent space at a storage like public storage and werent able to pay for 2 months what happens to your stuff? and would I be able to ever retrieve any of my valuables or were can I start to look? Travel Tips Sometimes the storage company will send the storage leasee a letter stating that if they don't come up with the back money, they will dispose of their stuff. That is usually done by an auction and anyone interested can purchase your stuff. Sometimes if people acquire your things and they find anything that has your name, address or phone on it they try to reach you and let you know if there is anything 'valuable' that you might want back. That however is fairly rare! Source(s): My husbands ex-wife let a bunch of stuff in a storage space go because she didn't pay the rent on it. Years later we got a call from someone who had acquired it. There were baby photos, high school memorabilia, etc. and they were nice enough to trace us thru some of the names they found inside the stuff. I made arrangements to meet them and they returned everything that they thought were personal memories. They didn't want any money in return, were just happy to return the items. Don't think that happens too often. But there are still some good folks out there. Other Travel Tips They hold public auctions and there it goes. They literally just open the door to your storage area. The buyers look from the outside and make bids. Its kind of a treasure hunt. You don't really know whats in the boxes etc so you could get lucky. Or... you could end up with S***. If you lost something its gone gone gone. Sorry! BTDT If a rented public storage space goes unpaid for a certain length of time, the contents are auctioned off at public auction. Sometimes boxes are auctioned individually, sometimes the contents of an entire unit are auctioned off by unit. It depends on the storage place. Before this happens, first you are sent a warning letter, a late fee is charged, and the unit is locked up by management so that you cannot access your unit until you pay the storage fee. Usually the auction is a last resort of the storage management if they cannot get you to pay your fee. Once your things are auctioned off, you might be able to buy them back from the people that bought your auctioned unit if you can figure out how to contact them, otherwise they are basically gone. |
