Do you need a credit card to check in and out of a hotel? |
Travel Info I'm going on a road trip this summer and I'm trying to plan out the financial situation. Do I need a credit card when I go to hotels along the way? Are there any that I don't have too? I really don't have the option to bring one with me so i need to know. Travel Tips Having a credit card for a hotel stay is not an absolute necessity. Most hotels will take cash, though they will ask you to pay up front and often they will require a deposit as well (in case you use the facilities that are not included, break something, etc.). Also, if you want to watch movies in the room or use the phone there will probably be a deposit requested. If you are planning on staying in any of the "better" hotels, some of them will not take cash in some areas - they want everything charged to your room. In that case, the deposit would be much higher for a cash-paying customer. If you don't want to use a credit card, consider putting your money into an account where you can use a debit card. This way they will swipe it just like a credit card, but you won't have a huge credit card bill at the end of the month. Be careful, though - sometimes they will place a temporary hold on a higher amount than what the room charge is - this normally stays on your account for approximatey 3 days, but that can vary. And some debit cards have daily limits - so check that before you leave so you won't get stuck somewhere and not be able to use it. The best option, if you are able to do this, is to use a combination of all three. Use the debit card as often as you can as it is the easiest and most secure way. Use the cash if you need it. And the credit card can be saved only for emergencies that might creep up. Even if the credit card does not have a high limit, it's good in a time of need. Good luck and enjoy your road trip! Others If you really can't take a credit card, get travelers checks or a pre-paid cash card of some kind. Don't carry a lot of cash. Yes, most hotels require you to have a credit card with you so that in case you skip out on the bill or cause damage to the hotel, they can charge your card for the charges. You don't have to pay with your card......they just use it to make sure you come back and clear your account. Good luck! |
