Checked baggage, no limit.

Carry on, they have to be in containers 3 oz. or less and have to all fit in *one* one-quart ziplock bag.
Others

Those itty bitty bottles and they have to all be placed in a zip lock bag... I really don't know the size though. I just buy when I get there or put my toiletries in my checked bags.
I think you cannot bring in more than 500 ml in your hand carried luggage. But the best is to leave them in your luggage bag in the cargo bay. If you bring in, you have to put them in transparent clear plastic bag and you have to declare them before your bag goes through the scanner. Sometimes out of their discretion, they can just take it away and for the kinder ones, they will put them separately but you can have them back once you have arrived. The plane itself got some toiletries. You can even ask from the steward / stewardess and for long haul flights, everything is available in the plane's toilet.
3 oz bottles, all you can fit in a quart size bag, usually if you play dumb you might be able to get away with more
I just flew from salt Lake city to Los Angeles last week. As far as I remember, you cannot bring any container that is larger than 100ml/oz (i forgot). Therefore I don't think you can bring shampoo unless you are bring the tiny travel size. I met two other ladies at the airport whose hand cream were confisticated even one had less than the limit capacity. However since the bottle was big, even she used more than half of it, it was still confisticated. If you are bring anything that is within the limit, you have to take it out of your carry on luggage and put it on the tray with nothing on top and nothing under so that the inspectors can see it.
