Travel Info Why is it that foreigners are so successful in Panama while Panamanians have little or no opportunities ? Travel Tips Panama is a paternalist state, therefore the general population look to the government as a problem solver. Those Panamanians that don't thrive on paternalism are successful because they look for their own solutions. As for foreigners well depending on how you see it. If you look at South American and Central American immigrants, those are people used to manual labor, and they are not shy to push a cart, or to do the kinds of jobs that Panamanians don't want to take because they feel superior. If you look at North Americans and Europeans, some of them come with enough capital to start a business, and the real successful ones are because they come with a business focus, and they are knowledgeable on how to make a business work. I don't know why, but they seem to grasp the situation more rapidly, and they usually find a niche where they can grow a business. I guess we Panamanians are used to only being Doctors, Lawyers, Architects, etc., and that's why we don't jump over the obstacles as others do. Others Lack of government programs and support (ie. basic services such as, education, health, etc.) Probably because the foreigners show up with capital already in hand while natives have no way to earn seed money for a business. Probably because they work harder and may be better educated Most Panamanians are lucky to earn $500.00 a month. Our simple little home costs $225.00/mo. Can you imagine how difficult it is for most Panamanians to save $$$ to start a business? Some do and are successful, but it's more difficult to start a business in Panama than the US and Europe. Hence, when a person moves to Panama with $10,000.00 or more... they are way ahead of most everyone else... well, financially speaking. |
