Travel Tips There are some definite neighborhoods in Panama that are not advisable for American to live in but they are easily distinguishable by their appearance. El Chorrillo, Santa Ana, San Felipe, Curundu, Calidonia are all within the heart city and not a place you would probably choose to buy or rent just from their appearance. What is different here than in the state is the way real estate is viewed. If you have ever shopped for a home in the US one of the things you are told to be aware of are other houses in the neighbor driving the value of your property down by their appearance and condition. In Panama I can show you every expensive neighbor in the city with beautiful high rise buildings, desirable location, stunning views; yet in each neighbor almost without exception there will be a small hold out area of poor people in unkempt homes reside and eek out a living. Once you are on the ground you will have one problem letting your eyes lead you to the correct neighborhoods. As long as you stay away from the cities along the canal you should be ok. It is a beautiful country for the most part. I can't stress it enough though, stay away from the docks. There are a lot of foreign sailors that are getting on land for the first time in months looking for easy prey. Stationed in Panama with the Army. Punta Patilla, Punta Pacifica, San Francisco, el Cangrejo, ElDorado are the higher end neighborhoods, nice but often congested.
