Travel Info When was st denis church in france built? Travel Tips During the 5th century, Saint Genevi猫ve built a church, who was enlarged, thanks to the Merovingian Kings (mainly Dagobert, between 629 and 639). Towards 630, the corpses of Saint Denis and his two companions, priest Rusticus and the deacon Eleuth猫re were buried in the church. During the second half ogf the 8th century, a nex sanctuary was built. Under the Carolingians reign, the church became a basilic, always renewed until the 14th century. During the second half of the 12th century, the abbot Suger, counsellor of the Kings Louis VI and Louis VII, destroyed the old church, and decided to built a gothic church. Thanks to him, the basilic became more important, the "regalia" (the insignia of the royalty) and the oriflamme of France are kept in this church, who was now the royal necropolis. Since Hugues Capet (King of France between 987 and 996), it's the main necropolis of the French monarchy. Others i dont know but its very nice, and its Catholic!! The St Denis Church was begun in 1136 by Abbot Suger but it wasnt actually finished until the end of the 13th Century. http://architecture.relig.free.fr/denis.... it has been built durings centuries, at that time there was no plans |
