Travel Tips My favorite hangout in Paris is Aux Trois Mailletz at 56 rue Galande in the 5th arr. Ots a very historic place and has been around forever. Famous jazz menj like Willie Dixon and Memphis Slim have played here in the past. The ground floor has a small bar and cocktail area and tables for dining. There is a piano going from about 7:30 until almost dawn. the current owner, Tony Wu, is a fan of both opera and Jazz and hires singers who reflect his tastes. (I sing there when I'm in Paris and if you're a singer you'll be treated like a long lost cousin by Tony). There's also a nightclub in the basement (Grande Spectacle en sous terre) with an atmosphere that will remind you of the 1950's. There's a constant stream of people pulling up in limos and dressed to the 9's headed down there thru the night although I tend to stay on the ground floor. The food is good and reasonably priced if you want to take dinner there although there are certainly beter places to eat in Paris. Mainly its a place to go to just relax, listen to a few tunes and become known. After a couple of nights you'll be considered a regular. The crowd is a mix of locals and tourists and I've always found this an easy place to feel at home. |
