Travel Tips I go to France 2-3 times a year, and almost everyone at hotels and the airport speak English. If that particular person doesn't, they will find you someone who does. THere are signs in english and lots of english speaking people. Of course.. you will find more French pple talking English than American speaking French !! Unlike Americans, most Europeans are bilingual (their native language and English) - so you'll have no problems communicating. Plenty of hotels and two major airports: CDG and Orly. Enjoy your trip! It's an international capital city. It receives millions of tourists from all over the world every year. The French can be a bit snobby when it comes to speaking English, but at least in Paris you won't have to worry about that at all. The same goes for every capital all over the world, by the way. Capitals are so international and the hotels, taxis, and the people are so used to international visitors that they don't mind if you come over for a week to spend your dollars (thanks!) and haven't learned the language first. Things may be different in the countryside. If you really want to make absolutely sure you won't run into trouble, get someone to teach you one (only one) French sentence. It helps to break the ice in many occasions, because it shows you've taken a bit of trouble to prepare yourself (and not learning the entire language is easily forgiven then): Excuse moi, je ne parle pas Francais, parl茅-vous Anglais? (Excuse me, I don't speak French, do you speak English?) Many Parisians speak English but if you are American They'll pretend they don't. I have found that If you ask every person you come in contact with, Parlay voo onglay? (I spelled it phonetically) Which means , Do you speak english? ,You will avoid much of the snobbery associated with the French. Have fun and if you are polite to them they will be very welcoming to you. |
