Travel Info If I got to Paris and can't speak French, will they be rude towards me. Travel Tips I think even the French will say that Parisians can be abrupt, just like New Yorker are to Americans. But don't worry about that. And by the way - the majority are cool, just busy :) If you want to get around efficiently, make sure that you are well briefed with information on attractions, getting around and accommodations. Most people in the service industries that tourists use, hoteliers and restaurateurs, speak at least some English. English is, after all, the de facto universal language. On the other hand, you should realize that not everyone in the world chooses to learn English. So although far more Parisians speak English than, for example, New Yorkers speak French, not everyone strolling down the street speaks English. I have, on many occasions, in many different countries, seen American tourists yelling at people in English on the theory that if you say it loud enough people will understand. I've also seen Americans become very angry and rude because they think they have the right to DEMAND that people speak English. Another reality is that millions of tourists descend on Paris every year. For those in the business of catering to tourists this is good news. For someone who is not in the tourism industry its a pain in the neck. So don't expect everyone to want to serve as an information service. People have no obligation to, for example, give you directions (especially if they don't speak English) and if they walk on by, don't be surprised. No. I couldn't speak French. Made sure we had a map and a phrase book. Taxi drivers speak o.k. English. You can manage the train system with a map. Menus are often written in French/ English although the translations are amusing, would you like skewers of chicken wipes, lawyers and prawns.Interesting. Don't raise your voice if they don't understand you, someone will help you. Paris is beautiful. Enjoy. |
