What is the area in PAris known as Paris Montmartre Pigalle like? Is it a good location for a tourist?

Travel Tips
Montmartre is in the north of the city and was, in an earlier era a place popular with artists. Picasso and Utrillo once lived and worked there.

Pigalle is the area immediately down the hill to the south of Montmartre. Its traditionally been a raucous neighborhood and the center of the Red Light district. its here that the Moulin Rouge is found along with, these days, dozens of sleazy sex shops and clip joints.

There are a lot of hostels and inexpensive hotels in the general area so many tourists, especially young , budget conscious tourists, wind up there.

Its perfectly safe despite some of the unsavoury places (just don't wander into any of them).

My own preference is for the more central areas and I would suggest looking for accomodation in the 4th, 5th or 6th arrondissements.

The Montmartre area is a very popular tourist spot I had no problems there. You can see photos of Montmartre here http://www.a-taste-of-france.com/montmar...
I agree with Rillifane...
You have to visit the Sacr茅-Coeur Basilique on the hill, watch the view of Paris ( don't forget your digital camera) drink a beer in a caf茅 on Abbesses place, then take the little train ( actually it's a bus who looks like a train) who will make you see all Montmartre streets... You need to have a lunch in the caf茅 of Am茅lie Poulain, who is located rue Lepic...You can visit the Montmartre cimetery ( near by the bridge, rue de Caulaincourt). You can have a walk Boulevard de Clichy( but be carefull, don't accept to enter in some bars such as " bars 脿 hotesses", some girls try to make you drink and these girls are not customers, they are traps...And if you refuse to pay their expensive price, then some guys want to beat you ! )

It's an interesting neighbourhood, but there is too much crowd , and it can seem to be "too" popular...
The best places in Paris, are 1st,2nd,4th,5th, 6th, 7th, 8th arrondissements, which are safer, with more cultural places to see...
I come to Paris at least 3 times every year...( I live in Istanbul)
I agree about Pigalle.... Good areas to stay are Republica, Marais or even Montparnasse if you want something quite at night.
Montmartre is a great area, you'll feel safe and comfortable as a tourist there. Pigalle is not far from there, but a little different. If you go to Pigalle, go to see a show at a place like the Moulin Rouge, then leave, there's not much else to see. To be perfectly honest with you, I felt a little uncomfortable when I was there. It's hard to go wrong anywhere in Paris though, a truly amazing city.
Montmartre is a good location for a tourist. But the boulevard down Montmartre (and Pigalle) are not a good place to stay. It(s where all the sex stuffs ar ein Paris and not so goos the night.
