Many museums allow students under 18 years to enter without charge. What form of ID is required?

Travel Info
Must we carry their passports or will a photo copy of the ID page be accepted? In the past (15 years ago) we were asked for a French Student ID, and a passport was not accepted. I haven't traveled with teen agers for a few years, but it seems that we didn't bother with the ID and paid the admission fees. The fees are up and the dollar is down. Any current knowledge of the system will earn you a wine in the 9th.
