Anyone hired a motor homes in Australia.? |
Travel Info We are looking to hire a motor home while in Australia, any positives or negatives? Are they expensive to hire? Any good places to visit from Waikiki Perth as long as it is still warm Travel Tips G'day Senior Card, Thank you for your question. The positive about mobile homes is that you carry them everywhere. The negative is that they are much more expensive to hire than a car is and they chew up petrol. The other alternative you should look at are caravan parks. Any place that you would want to visit in Australia has at least one caravan park. Most of those would have on-site vans and many have cabins that you can stay in. The advantage of those is you don't have to lug them into town each time you want a loaf of bread and you don't have to drive them everywhere you would go. You would take a mobile home to a van park anyway. As to van parks, both my brother and his family and my dad and his partner have stayed at Big 4 van parks. They both rated them highly and there are a number of them in Western Australia. As to trips, I would recommend a trip down the southwest round Bunbury, the Margaret River wineries and Albany. You might want to head out to the Kalgoorlie goldmines although it is a long trip there and back. If you have plenty of time, you might want to strike up the West Coast to Karratha or even Kunnunurra. Regarding the weather, it never gets really cold in WA (certainly not by North American or European standards). In July (midwinter in Australia), the average minimum temperature in Perth is 9 degrees celsius or 48.2 Fahrenheit while the average maximum is 17.4 degrees celsius or 63.3 Fahrenheit. Heat will be your biggest concern not cold. The Australian summer is December, January and February. I have attached sources for your reference. Other Travel Tips thank you cremedela, we hired a car and stayed at a couple of big 4 sites as we traveled from Waikiki to Sharks Bay and I can only say it was AWESOME. We still have a while to go. Yippee Very expensive. Anything from $150 a day plus so many cents per kilometre, plus petrol at nearly $1:50 per litre, plus insurances and then you have to pay to park it somewhere. It is much cheaper to do a camping style tour, if that's your bag and you want to travel and see a bit. There are plenty of operators working out of Perth. Check em out, you'll be surprised at the fares. One big downside is when you want a pint of milk, you have to pack up the whole van to take it to the shops - and it takes up 4 or more car park spaces ... and don't take it if the air conditioning isn't working properly. We relocated a campervan from Brisbane to Sydney for $5 a day - however had only 3 days to do it in, which sounds loads but is quite restictive. Camper van itself was fabulous though and would love to be able to afford one. Heavy on Petrol though |
