Travel Tips
Sorry I know you were asking Americans but I thought I wouls answer anyway! I have grown up in Perth and I love it. Just as other people have said it is a very clean city and it may be quiet compared to other cities but there is still plenty to do. We have beautiful landscapes, wineries, beaches etc
I would suggest you have a look at this site: www.westernaustralia.com
To drive from Perth to Sydney is quite a long drive! Not a lot a very scenic one either...but I do recommend going to the eastern states while you are in Australia, I love Brisbane/Gold Coast, Melbourne & Sydney Source(s): Lived here all me life!

Other Travel Tips
Perth is a quiet city, very pleasant - just like the rest of Australia.

Perth surprised me. At first, I wasn't too sure what to think. It probably had something to do with the rain and the 40 mph wind that was ripping through the city the day I arrived. Fortunately, things cleared up and I had a chance to really explore the city.

First, I'd like to state that Perth is the cleanest city I've ever visited. During my two days wandering around town, I didn't run into a single bum or panhandler, and there wasn't any trash laying around. In retrospect, I remember thinking about how refreshing it was to be in a place where the strangest people you ran into were the goth kids who huddled in groups of ten.

Everything in the city is within pretty easy reach. There are shops, restaurants, museums and parks all within walking distance of eachother. Parking was easy enough to find, which isn't always the case with a big city. I spent a couple days in Scarborough, which is a very nice beach community just north of Perth and worked my way down to Fremantle, which is a bit run down, but in a nice way; that is, I never felt like I was in a dangerous neighborhood.

I really enjoyed walking along the grassy park across the river from the city. The views were impressive and there were many nice places to eat.

If I had anything negative to say about Perth, it would be that people are a bit more stand-offish than the folks from eastern Australia. However, once you start to talk with the locals, they warm up quickly. I just didn't get that "Aussie Hospitality" feeling from most of the people in Western Australia, unless I was handing them money for something. WA really does have its own unique culture and feel and it definitely was worth the visit.
Perth is beautiful, but it is on the other side of Australia compared to the rest of the states, To drive from Perth to Sydney is great but its a long bloody way, all up its 4127 km . Four to Five days of driving through the middle of Australia from the West Coast to the East Coast. You can expect lots of Dust, Flies, you will see Emus, Kangaroos, Wombats, Eagles, all on the road so be careful not to hit any, they will all severly damage ur car. Also watch out for those crazy truckies they are all on drugs and they sit on about 100 mph..lol.. Now whatever you do dont stop for anyone, no matter what it looks like, especially in Barrow Creek..Anything can happen out there and it has,,ooohhhh!!! Keep ya doors locked at night , its an adventure in itself. Have fun,, Cheerssssssssssssss
