"Low lander" preparation for Machu Pichu and Cuzco, Peru? |
Travel Info Is there anything to prepare for a visit to Machu Pichu? I am a "low lander" and I have heard that the high elevation can be difficult. Any suggestions for preparing for trip to Peru? Travel Tips First, I am assuming that you are going from Lima to Cuzco by plane. This means you are going to have a fairly drastic change in altitude in about an hour (from near sea level to nearly 12000 feet). Your flight from Lima will also likely be very early, so you will be tired just from trying to catch that flight! Stay hydrated. Try not to exert yourself more than necessary. When you arrive in Cuzco relax and take a nap. Then you can begin to wonder around the city being area that the oxygen level is lower than you are used to. It is best not to drink too much alcohol on your first day. You will hear of the traditional method of avoiding effects of high altitude: coca leaves or coca tea. These you can easily get at almost any time. Some people swear by their effect. But beware. The tea does have caffeine and can keep you awake! Also be aware that Lima is usually overcast. When you get to Cuzco and then on up to Machu Picchu, you are likely to discover it is very sunny. So you will need to have sunscreen. (But note that Machu Picchu is actually lower than Cuzco at 8200 feet!) On the other hand, weather in the Andes can change quickly so be prepared with layered clothing. If you are taking the bus to Cuzco, then you will likely adjust as you make the trip. Therefore you are less likely to feel the effects so rapidly. On the other hand, the bus can be crowded so you may be just as tired! Enjoy. Thomas Talboy, PhD, Director Ubiquity International, LLC Experience. Explore.
