Is it possible to attempt the Machu Picchu trek without a guide? And would it be recommended to save money?

Travel Tips
I wouldn't recommend it, it is dangerous and you can get lost. The trail is not that well directed with signs (if any...).
Share the expense with other people if you want to save money but the guide is not going to be as expensive as you might think, by hiring a guide you are also employing somebody local and leaving a positive effect in their economy, much needed by the way.

Acclimatizing is key, have some good rest before going and bring some coca tea/leaves (coca leaf is not drug) with you for the trek.

Others
Would not recommend it, too dangerous and it will not save you any money.
I'm sure it's "possible", but why would you want to? You don't know your way around and you will likely end up dead (or worse). Just sprimng for the money-- the locals depend on you for your tourist dollars. Spread the wealth. Don't be so chincy.
It is possible but I would not recommend it.
you are mostly to get in danger from the terrain and you might get into distress and no one will be able to rescue you.
I'd say get a guide because it would be easier, if i were you I'd wait and get a guide so i know about it, and i mean who cares about the money unless you don't have enough of it. you know what I'm talking about. i actually don't know the answer to the second question sorry but i hope that whatever i said helped you.
I went many years ago and didn't even think of hiring a guide.
Just go to Cusco and take the train. Tip..There is one hotel and you can book a room to spend the night at the ruins. Do that if you plan a lot of hiking in the area. Generally you can see it all in one day and return to Cusco. When you enter the ruins you have the option of hiring a guide and it is helpful to know what you are looking at. You can listen to others :) Best to share a guide with others you meet. Good luck and have a nice trip. Be careful in Lima!
