Best way to cheaply backpack the Inca Trail in Peru.?

Travel Info
Well, I'd like to backpack the Inca Trail in Peru this summer. Where do start? How to find accomodations? Where to find the guides?

Thanks!

Travel Tips
Just buy a lonely planet, a plane ticket and show up there. ANything you buy in advance is going to work out more expensive than what you find on the ground. The town you want to go to is called Cuzco, there are regular (if a bit long) buses from Lima) When you arrive there are like a million agencies who will fight over your money (English is widely spoken), although they're all pretty interchangeable in terms of what they offer.

It's particularly busy over July and August when everyone's on school holidays so avoid that time if you can.

If you have time, I STRONGLY recommend Bolivia too, especially the Lakes around Uyuni.

Any more advice you want feel free to email me! ;)

Everyone tells you to buy Inca trail in advance but if you just arrive in Cuszco ( loads of cheap hostel accomodation) you will find hundreds of tours offered. Although you do need to get a permit before netering the trail, as numbers are heavily controlled. Tour agencies will do this for you, and dont forget to barter the price.
You can get to macchu pichu also by train ( rip off), or bus and locals train to aguas calientes then walk up - a great experience, and you can be inside the grounds before the inca trailers arrive!!!
As far as I know you cannot just "turn up" on the Inca Trail. You must travel with a licensed guide as part of a small group and the groups have to be registered in advance, so I suggest you do a bit of research online first.

Below is a direct quote from the website

Inca Trail Availability 2006

Since the number of trek permits is limited to 500 per day (about 200 tourists and 300 trekking staff) it is important to book well in advance. The trek permits are issued on a first-come-first-served basis up until all the permits have been sold out. In the low season there are some days when there are still permits available 4 or 5 days in advance, but in the high season (May to September) it is recommended that you book at least 3 months in advance to guarantee a place.

if yo define inca trail as the trek all the traveleres do to Machu picchu then it will be nice but expensive and crowded. once you get to cuzco you can take the local busses to the sacred valley and walk the Inca trail that connects the villages, ruins, etc. do some more research because There are newly discovered ruins similiar to machu pichu but no one goes there. it cost around 10-15 dollars to do this 2 days trek. In Pisaq, Another town that has ruins, I stayed at Hospedaje artisano for 5 dollars, the owner there has maps and knows where go to get to the newly discovered ruins. he also owns a restauraunt called IDEAS. good luck, I highly recommend travelling like a local through the sacred valley. the modern day Inca, and chetua are still to be seen smiling going about their simple life. and visit the markets that have been described as biblical. Remember altitude. I was huffing and puffing climbing the trails and the local grandmother blew right past me up the mountain.
