Is it better to take a tour in Peru or just go there by yourself and expolore? |
Travel Info I would like to see all the sites that most tour operators offer, but I am not sure their deals are all that good. Also, I want some adventure in this trip. Travel Tips Hi! I'm from Peru. If you come here, you should hire a tour, but hire it in the exact place (for example, if you go to Machu Picchu, you should hire it in the nearest city: Cusco). If you hire it from your country or from Lima (the capital), you'll probably have to pay a lot more than its real price. I suggest that you choose a city, go there and once you arrived, go to the main park and you'll find lots of agencies. Choose one, ask, if you like it, take it. I travel inside Peru in that way, and all the time I've had great trips. IM if you have any questions :D Source(s): Me living here... Other Travel Tips If youre going to Macchu Picchu (the Inca Trail hike), you must have a registered guide. And thats usually done in a group to keep costs down. A travel group will consist of the guide, other people in the party and a few porters (please tip them!) who carry the white gas, food, tents, etc. But beyond that, Id recommend a combinatino of both. I prefer doing stuff myself, but somethings are helpful and easier to have a guide or group (especially most of the Sacred Valley - so much to see!!). Ive spent about 5 months in peru, on the coast so I do have sonme experience there. Peru is totally safe. Like any place in the world, use common sense, keeps your wits about you, if you feel like youre getting scammed you probably are. I only had one problem there and thats because I couldnt identify fake money (lots of fake sols there so you have to know what to look for). GO! ITs safe, fun and gorgeous! Modified 11 months ago If I were you, I wouldn't go on my own in Peru, it's not safe. Get some good information about dangerous places. We've travelled four times to Peru, and want to go back. The first three were tours and they gave us a good idea of the lay of the land, plus took us to special places we wanted to see.The last time we worked with a local guide we'd met on a previous trip and had a fabulous, inexpensive time. We're older, so that means we may want to travel differently than you do. We were looking more for a leisurely pace than "adventure." We found you really need time to absorb the magic that is Peru. It is our favorite place. Our trips were all to the Sacred Valley, incl. Machu Picchu, except one to the Tambopata Research Center to see the massive clay lick which draws thousands of parrots and macaws. Lima has some interesting museums, and I imagine night life, but we think the beauty of the country is in the country side. Cuzco is well worth a few days stay. We found the people friendly and helpful. Like all places it is safe if you are careful. For example, you can visit the colorful market place in Cuzco, just don't carry lots of money or important papers. If you have never traveled in South America, I'd definitely say take a tour. Or at least book some local tours. I'd highly suggest you spend at least one night in Agua Calientes, preferably as many as 3, at the foot of Machu Picchu. (You could also really splurge and spend one night at the hotel at the top, but that takes lots of $$$) BTW, in addition to being physically gruelling, the Inca Trail is said to be rather unpleasant to travel because of what previous travellers have, er, left along the trail side. You can find plenty of chances to hike in the country side. Also, soroche (altitude sickness) affects some, so be aware of that. http://jackmaryetc.com/travel/americas/p... |
