Where in Peru is Machu Picchu? |
Travel Info Where in Peru is Machu Picchu? Travel Tips Machu Picchu is a city located high in the Andes Mountains in modern Peru. It lies 43 miles northwest of Cuzco at the top of a ridge, hiding it from the Urabamba gorge below. The ridge is between a block of highland and the massive Huaynac Picchu, around which the Urubamba River takes a sharp bend.. Source(s): http://www.mnsu.edu/emuseum/prehistory/l... Other Travel Tips Machu Picchu is an Inca city in Cuzco, Peru, In tv news stores and newspaper articles, and even in travel agencies, Machu Picchu is described as being in the city of Cuzco. That is a little misleading. Machu Picchu is about 40 miles away, and the most common way of getting there is a spectacular train ride up the Urubumba River. At some points, the train glides along deep canyon edges to a raging river below. It comes to rest in Aquas Calientes, which is spanish for Hot Water or Hot Springs. This is a lovely little tourist spot with lots of shopping. This is also where you will board a bus for what seems like an equally perilous ride up the mountain toMachu Picchu . Most people who visit Machu Picchu stay in Cuzco; however, there are a few places to stay in A. Calientes and a very expensvie hotel at Machu Picchu itself. Another option is to hike the Inca Trail, which takes 2-4 days depending where you start on the trail. That will take you over a moutain ridge by foot, and you descend into Machu Picchu instead of going up the mountain by bus to get to it... which is pretty cool. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions! I am an AMeican who used to live in Cuzco. Its in Cuzco at the northwest part of the country I'm peruvian Machu Picchu is definitely the most important tourist attraction for Peru, it is big citadel built in the middle of the jungle, it is not clear what ancient Peruvian used this impressive building for. If you are traveling to Peru, it is a must to go there, firstly, you will get to Cusco, and stay there 3-4 days, and you will also have the chance for overnight in Aguas Calientes. There also another places that you should visit such as Arequipa (Colca Canyon), Puno (Titicaca Lake & Floating Islands), Huaraz (adventure sports), Chiclayo (Lord of Sipan), Ica (Nazca Lines & Ballestas Islands). Finally, you could taste Peruvian food which is well-known all over the world (cebiche, arroz con pollo, papa la huancaina), and our typical national drink Pisco Sour. |
