Travel Info Are there any german ancestry communities near Iquitos, peru? Travel Tips There is a community made from Tyrolean (Austria), which is called Oxapampa. It is said this group of people speak ancient German, with an accent that has been lost even in Germany Others Yes, but it's not near Iquitos. During the 1850's, the Peruvian government decided to increase the European immigration and also populate some areas of the Peruvian rain forest. In order to do this, a German baron was hired to offer lands and money to the people who decided to travel to Peru to start the colonies. The goal was to get 10 000 colonists. After some months the first ship, carrying 300 people from Prusia and Tyrol arrived to the Peruvian coast. After traveling for some months, many of the Europeans decided to stay in the towns they stopped by because of the toughness of the road. At the end, the journey stopped at the valley of Pozuzo, in the region of Oxapampa, where they built the town of Pozuzo. They didn't go further because it was too hard to keep going through the rain forest. A second ship with more colonists arrive after some years. However, this new colonists also went to Pozuzo and decided not to go further. Because of that, Pozuzo is known for being the most important German colony in Peru. I'm from Peru |
