It's safer than people in the U.S. think but not as safe as it should.
As long as you don't wear anything too fancy or jewlery, you should be OK
I think that Lima is in the running for the most dangerous capital in South America. I've lived in Ecuador, Peru, Argentina, and visited Colombia, Costa Rica, Bolivia and El Salvador. Miraflores is touted as being safer because it's nice-looking, but I think that's actually its biggest disadvantage. I spent about a week in Lima; I stayed in the historic district with no problem (I've actually never had a problem anywhere in Latin America and I am a 22 year old blonde female).

You should be safe in your hotel, if it's reputable. Your person will definitely be safe, I can't speak for your belongings because I don't know the hotel. Again, I was in a dorm-style hostel and never had a problem (never have had one, either), but I also try to think like a criminal and take precautions.

In Miraflores, you should not wear anything gaudy or of value. Make a photocopy of your documents and take them around with you. Thieves are not idiots; they know about those little hipsack pouches you wear under your clothes. If you wanted to sew a pocket inside your jeans, that could be smart as well. I usually leave my passport hidden somewhere, or if you are staying at a reputable place, you could see if they have security boxes, and I take a photocopy with me. If anyone (police officer, etc), asks me where my documents are, I explain that I don't carry them on me because it's not safe. This is true and they know that, and since I'm never involved in illegal activity, they don't have a problem with it.

I don't know how your Spanish is or how comfortable you are in places like Lima, so... Get the number of a reputable taxi company from your hotel or a trusted source. Call for a taxi whenever you are out, because taxi drivers in Lima are famous for robbing their clients. Don't stay out too late, DON'T get obviously drunk (that makes you an obvious target), etc. Enjoy yourself, enjoy the city, be confident. I'm not trying to scare you, but you do need to keep your eyes open. Peruvians would say the same things to you.

Currently, Lima is one hour ahead of Wisconsin (same as EST), but South American doesn't change for daylight saving, so if you're going after we change the clocks, Lima will be syncronized with Wisconsin time.

Best of luck to you!! Check www.lonelyplanet.com on the Thorntree forums for more info on travelling in Latin America.

Yes it is safe in a Miraflores hotel . So when you get there hunker down
should be synchronized to the exact time by now, there are safe places in Lima as in other capitals of the world, would you walk at night with a 24 kt gold chain in Detroit, new york,L.A or Philly probably not same history goes for Lima and all capitals of the world a friend of mine was robed at gun point in Paris- France;
and lived 5 years in Peru and was never touched, Lima has many districts that are safe for example: San Isidro,Monte Rico,casuarinas,San borja,miraflores,barranco,chac... Del estanque and many more that are very exclusive and expensive,hotels are located in all of those, in the provinces like Cuzco and others people is very different ,very friendly help full and proud they want to show you everything you will be fine enjoy.
