Peru currency?

Travel Info
what kind of currency do they use in peru and if its not American how many of them equals a dollar or vise versa

Travel Tips
Hi Marina, the official Peruvian Currency is the Nuevo Sol (commonly called Sol or Soles in plural, the word comes from the word Sun in Spanish -Sol- which was the divinity of the Incas and the word New in Spanish -Nuevo- because there was another Sol currency before) in denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, and 200. Available coins are 1, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents ("centimos" in Spanish) and 1, 2 and 5 Nuevos Soles. The current exchange rate varies between 3.2 and 3.3 Nuevos Soles per 1 US Dollar. Peru is really accostummed to US Dollars, in fact, ATM's provide both currencies, Soles and Dollars (not mixed of course, you choose what you prefer). You can pay with dollars in almost every shop in the cities (not in the countryside areas, not tourist small towns, and not taxi drivers for example). Source(s): I've lived in Peru for one year until October 2006. Have many friends there and I'm in daily contact with the country and Peruvian economy news.

Other Travel Tips
The Peruvian currency is called the Nuevos Soles. 1 nuevo soles is worth 1.33 in US dollars at today's current rate.
