What city should I move to? Philly, Boston or Asheville, NC? |
Travel Info I wouldn't be moving until July of next year. I'm 24, out of college and ready for a change Phily is my front runner but I would like to hear pros and cons on all three. Thanks in advance. Travel Tips I actually live in Philadelphia, and can tell you this would be your best choice. Asheville is nice, but not a whole lot to do there beyond outdoor activities. Boston is a terrific city if you can afford to live there. Philadelphia is the 5th largest city (or 6th if you include Phoenix, which amounts to a massive suburb) in the U.S. and is still the most affordable city in the Northeast. There's plenty to do here and yet if you want to make a quick trip on the weekend you can...two hours by train to NYC ($42 roundtrip on SEPTA/NJ Transit trains connecting through Trenton, or an hour and 15 minutes on Amtrak for about $150 roundtrip) and two hours to DC via Amtrak for about $150 roundtrip. You definitely have more of a sense here that you're in the middle of so much to do. We have world class museums....The Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Rodin Museum which has the largest collection of his works outside of Paris, and the Barnes which has one of the most prestigious collections in the world. We have history, pretty much the "first" anything in US History was here. I spend many a day wandering the cobbled streets of the historic districts, it's so beautiful I never get tired of it. Society Hill will become your favorite neighborhood to hang out in, with beautiful colonial rowhouses, narrow cobbled streets and little public "pocket gardens" wedged in here and there. Center City Philadelphia, the area you'll want to concentrate on in terms of living, is full of great restaurants, coffee shops, clubs, shopping and services. Center City as it is called, basically downtown Philadelphia, has a young vibe and is the third most populated downtown in the US, behind only NYC and Chicago. The city center is compact and very walkable. You'll never need a car, and the transit system within the city is very efficient. The monthly City transit pass is $70, with unlimited rides on the subways and buses. Personal safety is on par with any other city in the US. There is a bit of violent crime here, but in neighborhoods you'll never set foot in if you're not using or buying drugs...which is usually the case in other cities too. Areas to avoid would be University City and Fairmount. They are border neighborhoods which will seemingly never gentrify. The best neighborhoods are Washington Square, Washington Square West, Society Hill, Rittenhouse Square, Old City and Logan Square (south of Vine Street). The next tier down, which would save you some money but still be near everything, would be the Bella Vista/Queen Village and Art Museum(below Spring Garden Street) neighborhoods. They are tree-covered and beautiful. It's known as a cultural center, many free-thinking and groovy people live there. There is always something going on. I pasted a couple of links below. I think Boston is awesome too, but more expensive cost of living if that's a factor for you. I have been to Philly but not extensively enough to give advice. I think you should plan a trip to visit all three. Get out and talk to the locals, look around and get a feel for the daily vibe there. Good luck! Edited to add- try the US board on here too, you'll get more feedback. http://answers.yahoo.com/ http://www.ashevillenc.com/ http://www.ci.asheville.nc.us/visitors/v... Philadelphia is a wonderful historic city. There is a lot of things to do, wonderful places to work, play and otherwise have fun. Some things shock people when they move into the area, like the Pennsylvania liquor laws, and the traffic congestion. However, the good things in the area outweigh the bad by the hundreds. I grew up in the Washington DC area, and I wouldn't move away from Philly for almost anything. Good luck http://www.gophila.com |
