Where is the best place to visit in Philidelphia? |
Travel Info Im going to Philly tomorrow, and I need to know what to do! Where is the best Philly Cheesesteak place? Whats the best thing to do during the day? Travel Tips Cheesesteaks...you'll never get the right answer from someone. This has to be personal opinion. You have Pat's and Geno's--the legends--right across from eachother. I think of them as the ones I'll only eat when I'm wasted. Others swear by Jim's, and then others Tony Luke's (they do have the best roast pork though...get the sharp provolone and broccoli rabe on it) and then even more will tell you it's the shop around the corner from them. There is no "best" cheesesteak in Philly, since everyone has there own idea of what it should be. I'd try Pat's and Geno's just to say that I did, but I'm telling you, don't expect anything incredible. As far as where to go...well... South Street--shopping, freaky-freaks, shows, bars, novelty shops and a lot of younger, out of towners. Old City--nice area, tons of bars/restaraunts. Probably a good lunch spot during the day, but definitely the scene to drink at over the weekends. It can get a little pretentious down there though, but even then, there are bars that are just that...bars. This is where a lot of the historical district resides as well, i.e. the constitution center, liberty bell, etc. Rittenhouse--Rittenhouse Park is beautiful and there's a lot of restaraunts and bars around there. Be prepared to spend money though. Center City--is more corporate and work oriented, however, there is a lot of shopping on Walnut street. Northern Liberties--a newer destination with a ton of new bars, restaraunts and novelty shops. Not novelty like South street (body piercing, sex shops, etc.) but more like glass-blowing, boutiques and things like that. People are a little more down to earth around there too. Art Museum--pretty self explanatory. The inside of the art museum is just that...a museum. The most looked-past spot though is the exterior. Take a walk around the outside of it, down the trails and to the river. Boathouse row, Kelly Drive and waterworks are there as well. This is the area I live in. Shoot an email if you have more specific interests. Others South street for the freaks, cheese steaks everywhere. Historical district 2nd & Arch area. Besty Ross House, Liberty Bell. The BEST cheese steaks are at Jim's at 4th and South. Do NOT go to Starbucks on South Street. Go to the Bean Cafe, right across from Tower Records (a huge store) on South above 6th. Tell Jen that Nate's Dad sent you. The whole South Street scene is like going to a mall, only outdoors with real stores owned by real people and not a bunch of duplicate stores that look the same in Philly as they do in Las Vegas or Tacoma. It would help to know how old you are........ Well, yeah, there's a whole list of great stuff to do, but I got the idea this was a one day trip or maybe the weekend. Don't know why... I have to say that I agree with everything that "jdm" said in his answer. However, he forgot one very historic and interesting place to visit. The Philadedlphia Zoo! The oldest zoo in the country. Go and see their new "Big Cat Falls" exhibit, it's purr-fect. :) http://www.philadelphiazoo.org Friday is First Friday. This means a lot of the trendy spots in Olde City are open late. The galleries and shoppes have special hours and host late open houses. If you able & into it definately check out the art museum. If you are still here on Sunday...that's the best day to go. The admission fee is reduced to only a donation between 11AM-1PM (I usually give between 5-10 dollars). Get there It is amazing. It will transport you to an European city both on the exterior & interior of the museum. South Street ( Pats Steaks) During the day if you go to the visiting center at 2nd and Market St. they can give you information on different places to go |
