Pittsburgh...particularly University of Pitttsburgh? |
Travel Info What is the Pittsburgh area like? I'm thinking about attending U. Of Pittsburgh for my doctorate & was wondering what the living expenses, recreational activities, & such are like in the area. Any info on the city or university would be appreciated! Travel Tips Log onto PittsburghPost-Gazette.com It is one of the local newspapers. I used to live in Pittsburgh, but moved away several years ago, and can't give you any current information as to the cost of things. It's like most any other big city. Usual pro sports, lots of educational places to visit, etc. Museum, planetarium, zoo, water sports. You can ride inclines up the side of hills where people live at the top of them. You get a marvelous view of the city when you do this. There are 3 rivers that flow into Pittsburgh. The Monongahela and Allegheny Rivers meet at "The Point" to form the Ohio River. The University of Pittsburgh owns practically every hospital in Pittsburgh. It is a very nice college. The best of everything to you! Others Thank you, Voters. HAGD I lived there...but didn't like it. I went to Point Park College (now University), so that's probably a huge part of it. Pitt is in a big college area of the city...so it's very college oriented. Lots of bars, quirky stores, cafes, you get the picture. There are plenty of parks and museums in Pittsburgh, if that's your think. They also have three major sports teams and cultural events like symphony, etc. If I had to do it again, I'd choose to live in Squirrel Hill. It's a preppy Starbucks type area, but very nice and quaint with lots of stuff within in walking distance. I think it also houses a large Jewish community (as a point of interest). Good luck with your degree. Pittsburgh as a student is great I think... I've been here for 5 yrs of grad school. Lots of variety in terms of living... most grad students live in Shadyside (sort of the yuppie/preppie area, most expensive) or nearby Squirrel Hill or Friendship (a little more residential). All are close to restaurants, grocery stores, bars, coffee shops, shopping. Pittsburgh bus system makes it easy to get from those neighborhoods to Oakland (or downtown or wherever) and FREE for students. Pittsburgh is cheap... I have a HUGE (we're talking like 1500 sq. feet) one bedroom with my own back and side yard and it's only $600 a month (in Friendship). And you can pay much less if you live with others or in a smaller place. Culture is a little thin being its a smallish city... but is there if you want it, decent shows and museums. Good outdoors groups (climbing, mountaineering, hiking) if that's you're thing too. I am a Pitt graduate. I lived on campus and near campus for years (even after I graduated). Pittsburgh is a wonderful city. I have traveled the world and lived in many big cities since then, and none compares to Pittsburgh. There is so much to do on and near campus! For example, have you been to the Cathedral of Learning (classroom Gothic cathedral with Nationality Rooms inside) or the nearby Carnegie Museum? So much to do! There's great nightlife, restaurants, shopping, and plenty of housing in the general campus vicinity. I couldn't tell you the prices now, but I know Pittsburgh is far less costly than, say, Philadelphia (I have also lived there). The folks in Pittsburgh are nicer than you'll find anywhere, and the good feeling on campus is unmatched. For such a huge university, it has a wonderful, small feel, where you will know people on campus and see faces in the crowd that you recognize all the time. It's the best of all worlds in Pittsburgh and at Pitt. I cannot say enough good about both. Hail to Pitt! I hope you attend Pitt because it's a world-class university in a fantastic city and a great campus! Good luck. Well Pittsburgh, PA is a very nice area. I lived herefor 14 yearsand I'm 14 years old. Alot of people who come here say that Pittsburgh people are very rude. And they are thought. Well there is Kennywood park which i go to every year. There is Sandcastle park which is a water park which I thought was soo gay but alot of people think it is fun. There is idelwidle park which is a water and amusment park whichI haven't been to in a while but i hate it because when i was drowning in the pool they didn't jump in to save me. Well there are alot of things to eat and the golden triangle and point state park. Pittsburgh is not that expensive either. Gas prices are 2.70 or lower than that, they are dropping thought. I think it is borning but since your coming out of time you'll find something fun to do. I love kennywood so as long as i have that i'm never bored |
