What is the best way to commute from Philly to NYC? |
Travel Info I live right outside of Philly on the NJ side and may end up with a job in NYC next year. I am wondering what the best way is to commute there. I looked at NJ Transit and Septa, but both look like they would take me a minimum of 2 hours, sometimes 3 hours, each way, even if I drive part of the way before picking up the train. I have read that a lot of people do this commute regularly. What is the quickest way? I don't think living in NYC will be an option unless I can find a couple of cool roomates (pay would be in the neighborhood of 30k) Travel Tips Many people take Amtrak, but their incomes can take that daily hit. NJ Transit and Septa is good, but long. If you can, drive to Trenton and take the train from there. I live about 35 minutes from Trenton, straight up Route 1. It might save you a few dollars. Others Find the roomates and move to NYC. It's not worth the stress and $ that commuting will cost you. drive to the Trenton train station pay the ten bucks to park in the lot and take the rail (not AMtrak as that will cost 42 dollars vice 10). It only takes just over an hour to get to Penn station in NYC North Jersey and New York are both expensive places to live. Are you sure that you're willing to make the move for that pay? I'd check the Craigslist for both cities for apartments, roomates and then hit the sectons for general talk to ask questions. Surely, you're not the only one ever faced with this decision. I know the trip to Penn Station from 30th Street is close to 2 and a half hours. The NJ Transit part seems faster to me, but I don't know...maybe an hour to NYC from Trenton. Have you thought about places like Bordentown, Trenton, Burlington, etc for living? There's the Riverlink that runs up to that same Trenton stop where the NJ Transit line is. You would probably save a lot of money trying to commute from a place like that, where the cost of living is less than it may be in a place like Hoboken or NYC itself. You may want to check on the hours though, because I know that line doubles as a freight line late at night, and I think the RiverLink may get suspended for a few hours...double check though. What about all of the town along the NJ Transit line? Any of them worth taking a look at moving into? How about commuter reimbursements from your company, or even frequent traveller discounts? Keep an eye out for that kind of thing as well. You can get a monthly pass from Amtrak. It's much faster than NJ transit. My question would be why would you accept a job in NYC that only paid 30k, if you'd have to spend 1/5th of that on commuting costs? I'm sure you can find a job in Philadelphia for that or more. nj transit/septa. if money is a non issue do amtrak. |
