I live just a little bit outside of Philadelphia, but I did not grow up here. I wouldn't pay so much attention to those on here who talk about crime. For one, there is a lot less crime than 20 years ago. Second, you'll probably stay in Center City (downtown) in one of the more expensive neighborhoods, where crime is much lower than the places you would call "bad neighborhoods."

The obvious area to go is around the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, and South Street. If you're into the cheesesteak thing, you can head to South Philly for Pat's or Gino's (or both). Also, the US Mint just started giving tours again last year (they were suspended after 9/11). I went once as a kid and it was pretty cool. There are lots of trendy restaurants around Old City (approximately between Market and South Sts and between the waterfront and 5th St) and the Rittenhouse Square area. A couple of them that I have been to and really enjoyed are Tria (Rittenhouse area) and Cuba Libre (Old City).

However, what I would recommend in addition to the usual historical sites around Independence Park are the museums. The Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Franklin Institute (science museum) are close together on the Ben Franklin Parkway, which is also interesting area itself.

Also, the often forgotten, but amazing University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology at 33rd and Spruce Streets, right over the Schuylkill river from Center City. This museum is the place to go if you like ancient civilizations -- tons of Egyptian, Mesopotamian, and Mesoamerican artifacts. And, to compliment the new King Tut exhibit at the Franklin Institute (starting in February), the University Museum has an exhibit on the Amarna Period of ancient Egypt opening Nov. 12.

I stayed there for a month but that was almost 20 years ago. I travelled a lot in the US at that time and Philadelphia was the only place where I didn't feel safe. I stayed with a friend who didn't exactly live in the best neighbourhood and I have never witnessed so much crime or so many people living on the streets.

Downtown Philadelphia wasn't too bad if I made sure not to cross the wrong streets. I don't remember many special sights except of course the liberty bell, The Thinker and a big clothes pin (sculpture). There were some good comedy clubs there but apart from that, I didn't enjoy my time there too much.

I'm sure there have been a lot of changes there in 20 years but wherever you go, be careful and avoid walking around alone.

also go to the philadelphia tourest center (Web site and there they will have a contact information and maps) for information and possibe arranging of a semi private scheduled tour of the mint

Try the Independence Mall, Franklin Institute and a sporting event (just don't wear the opposing team's colors).
yupp..live within an hour of there, and just went there last night.. lol
(1)The franklin institute.. has many things to do, like a sports thing, a weather area two theatre type things, theres a room that changes (like what its on..the body, war, etc)
(2)the independance muesuem or national something mesuem.. sry i forget the name but it is a good place to go
(3)art museum.. never been there but i heard its a good art place from others
(4)philly also has a china town.. a few blocks of just chinese stuff if you like that type of stuff
(5)south street is a long street with shops. at one end is the deleware river that seperates NJ from PA (at night there are pretty lights on it).
