Does anyone know of a good area to live in Philly w/ kids? Can you tell me about Mt. Airy? (sounded the best)?

Travel Info
We have four kids, ages 5 and under, including an infant. Dh will be going to school and working in city center if we go (don't know where yet) and we're looking for a safe neighborhood that's good for families. We are very liberal and vegetarians...pretty green (coming from Seattle!) and looking for a similar area. Mt. Airy seemed the best fit..but curious to know how it is from locals..and other good family areas. Thanks!

Travel Tips
Mt. Airy is the best place for you. I was born and raised in Mt. Airy. There are a couple of sections (East and West). Once you cross Stenton Ave., (going towards Germantown Ave.) you will find mixed neighborhoods and lovely single and twin homes. I lived four blocks from the train station which made an easy commute to Center City Philadelphia. Many of the streets are treelined and very liberal :)...go Green Party! Check out Durham Street as a matter of personal experience. There is a house in the 500 Block for sale at $459,500. Good luck and if you have any questions, please email me at philly_romantic@yahoo.com!

Funny that you mentioned it. I was just driving though Mt Airy last night and telling my husband how nice everything is. Mt Airy is a really great neighborhood. It's very safe, the houses and area is beautiful with lots of parks. Mt Airy is right next to Chestnut Hill which is also just as good of a neighborhood if not better than Mt Airy. Good luck.
Near St. Joe's University also the Northeast ( Henrey ave area)but that can be a long commute.
I am from the suburbs of Philly, and know that there are several easy ways to live outside of the city limits and also easily commute to center city. It really depends on what kind of money you can afford for housing. Maybe try looking on realtor.com at houses in the phila area, and then to more research into those neighborhoods once you find a price range you can afford. Mt. Airy and Chestnut Hill are both very expensive areas, at least I think they are.
