I have a 3 and a half layover at the Philly airport next week. What should I do? |
Travel Info Leaving an hour and a half to get back through security and to my gate (which is way more than enough), I have 2 more hours to do something in Philly, including travel time to and from the airport. What do I have enough time to do that is interesting and/or entertaining? Travel Tips Well, first of all, the train that runs from the airport to 30th Street Station (Philly's main station) is the SEPTA R1. That trip isn't a short one though. I think one way might be 20 minutes at least, but even then, there isn't a whole lot around 30th Street Station either. There's Drexel and UPenn, but it'll be a couple of blocks before you make it into the heart of either campus...not much to see anyways. If you decide to chance it a little more, you could take the Market-Frankfurt El (Blue Line) to Old City, like 2nd and Market and stroll around out there. You can pick it up inside of 30th Street Station...it's one of the main subways in Philly. Lots of restaraunts and bars, and Independence Hall isn't too far away if you're into history. You may be able to get a cab from there too, but it'll be $25. Download a map from SEPTA's website and get familiar, but I wouldn't stray from the Blue Line. You could take a cab from the airport, but it's going to be $25 flat rate there too I believe. People are right though when they say that the 2 hours will be kind of short. The main highway once you get out of the airport is I-95, and it sees a pretty good amount of traffic. You could, however (if you're willing to spend the money OR bargain with the cabbie) hit Tony Luke's on Oregon Avenue in South Philly. It's about 3-5 miles away from the airport and is right off of 95...actually, it's directly underneathe it. Maybe yoyu could convince a cabby to take you there, hang on and then take you back to the airport for a sandwich or something? The lines can get long there though, so be prepared. If you make it, I personally think they have the best cheesesteaks in Philly, but they're known all over the area for their Roast Pork sandwiches with brocolli rabe and sharp provolone. If you do that, you'll even pass all of the stadiums, including Lincoln Financial Field...close enough where you can actually see the field. I know it's not exactly a tour, but it's kind of cool to be able to see the inside of it from the highway. Unfortunately, there are not too many things that close to the airport. You could at least sneak in a cheesesteak, but I don't think you could get in much more. Good luck either way. Oh...and don't worry...not everyone in Philly is a pr1ck. Others If you want to take a chance get a cheese steak sandwich. Otherwise go and hover in the corner and hang on to your possesions. Philthydelphia. THE CITY OF BROTHERLY SHOVE Hang out and eat inside the airport restaurants. Browse around the bookstore magazine rack. Walk around to keep the heart pumped. I'd not risk leaving the airport or problems getting back through the security lines. Take a book or your laptop and hang out at the airport. many years travelling and many layovers After racking up around 19,000 frequent flyer miles this year I can say from honest experience the best thing to do on a layover is work on a file you've fallen behind on or sleep. Take advantage of the airport's WiFi and make some extra money by finishing up a presentation... But, sleep is preferable. It's the only thing you can't regret doing as you're doing it. ;) Your two hours may sound like a lot of time, but it really isn't. Traffic is a nightmare like NYC so you can't guarantee that you will get back in time for your flight---just walk around the mini mall inside the airport and buy a good book---with security heightened like it is, it's not worth chancing missing your flight. |
