Travel Tips
You really can't stay in a "nice place" near Center City Philadelphia for that price any more. However, I have two suggestions: If you can stretch to the $75-$80 range, you can often find good downtown hotels through http://www.hotwire.com. I have gotten some real deals through them, and their hotels are very nice. Or, if you really must stick to the $50 range, you can usually get something out near the airport through Hotwire. About a year ago, I got a suite at the Marriot at the airport for $51.

You can also try Priceline.com, where you bid on a hotel price. One good ploy is to play them off against each other. Check Hotwire (which gives you a specific price and a star rating) then go to Priceline and bid on a hotel in the same neighborhood with the same star rating. Naturally, you should bid less than the price you were quoted on Hotwire. If your bid is accepted through Priceline, great. You're in. If not, then you can still go back to Hotwire, and book a room through them.

If you absolutely must keep the price down very low AND you must stay in Center City, then there is one place I can suggest: The Bank Street Hostel. Bank Street is between 2nd and 3rd Streets and between Market and Chestnut Streets. This is a hostel, not a hotel, which means that it has dormitory-type rooms and shared bath. It is clean and it is respectable, but a dorm arrangement is not what I have in mind if someone asks for a nice hotel. Still, if it meets your needs, you cannot beat the price, about $20/night if you belong to the American Youth Hostels, and a couple of dollars more if you don't. You can call 800-392-4678 if you want more info.

Good luck!!

I don't know what you're going to find for $30-50 a night. Try local.live.com (Microsoft's answer to google maps). Zoom in on the area in Philly that you'll be in and type "Hotels" or "Motels" or "Hostels" or "Lodging" into the top search bar. Listings will be displayed on the left-hand side and on the map itself. The results will also change as you move around the map. Only 10 results will be listed at a time, so if you like a specific area click "Next" on the search results to see more (if there are any). Don't zoom in too far, as I said, results will be displayed at least in part by what is visible on your screen.

Good luck!
There's a Best Western on like 21st and Hamilton. There, you're about 6 blocks from Broad, and only one block from Spring Garden. I think that may be as cheap as you can get near Center City. Where about in the city?
in center city philadelphia worked in the hotel business there for many years. sorry but if you want a nice place to stay. your not going to get it as that low rate. (not unlesss noise is not a problem or if you dont mind hooker working) if you travel a lot ask for a corporate rate or some type of discounted rate.(aaa, aarp, priceline or some of those 50% off programs) some of the nicier hotel will be happy to have your business. some nicier hotel are 18th street holiday inn, 3rd street holiday inn and the warwick hotel on 18th and loust street.(they do have good service and locations and look for business) I dont recommend that hotel in 21st street. ask some of the workers. at the hotels you have stayed at most of the doorman have been there forever
