Neighborhood to buy a house in Philly?

My wife and are looking to move into Philly and buy a house, as she works there now. We would like to find a good neighborhood that we could buy a house for about $150k, but only know a little about the different areas. We don't need anything too fancy, but relatively safe is good, especially to be able to walk down the street holding hands as an interracial couple (have had problems elsewhere). Closer to Center City would be better, but I know it's mostly more expensive there. Any ideas?

You need to do some investigating as to what the up and coming neighborhoods are and whether you are willing to take a gamble on being an urban pioneer that will hold out until a particular neighborhood revitalizes. I know some people that have made out good by investing in properties in Fishtown and Bella Vista, which are close to Center City...but then again, you are taking a gamble.

mt airy is known as one of the most diverse areas in the country. not only is it physically nice, it's affordable and very, very kind to interracial couples. try checking craigslist.org

I would look for a house in the Mayfair section. Nice area with intteracial dating. Houses are like 120,000.
Good neighborhood, 150k house, relatively safe? Close to CC? Well first place to check is the University City section of West Phila. This the area around the Uof P & Drexel Campuses. Mixed race area, 7-10mins from City Hall, many homes available with more being redeveloped. The Areas arround the schools are rather highly policed. Easy SEPTA access & Supermarkets close by. For say, 300K You can get brand new Town houses in Brewerytown near 32nd And Girard By Westrum. 2 blocks from the zoo & 4or5 from the Art Musuem & Kelly Drive. Beyond that? Your going to travel a bit farther from CC to places like Germantown. Have not done much home pricing lately... The market is in flux so shop around. There are many bargains in your price range. most Row homes in Phila, are 80-230k.
Upper Northeast... out near Frankford Toursdale Hospital and franklin Mills.
Northeast philly is pretty good..
