Is it a good idea to move to upper derby, PA? |
Travel Info my parents are planning to move to PA in the upper derby area..i just want some info on the nieghborhood (good/bad). we live in NYC and i personally love the city..but my parents are planning to buy a house in that area and move in.. i would like to get some suggestions about the derby city- Travel Tips Having lived there, my experience with Philadelphia and the surrounding cities is that one block is nice and the next block is dangerous; there is no good neighborhood or bad neighborhood, just mixed neighborhoods that are luck of the draw. I remember walking to the train station near Overbrook station from a house I was living in. Depending on the time of day, I would feel safe one block, then I would have my guard up the next block. I remember once walking from one block that was fine to another where I felt so unsafe that I was forced to turn around and head back to my place to take my car downtown rather than take the public transportation that was just a few blocks away. Upper Darby is not as bad as Philadelphia, but it is still Philadelphia. It certainly doesn't have the charm of a NYC neighborhood; Philadelphia is an economically depressed city that is becoming worse by the day. Your neighbors might be decent people or the type that end up on the evening news. I would recommend that your parents reconsider moving to Upper Darby and look a little bit further outside of the city. The price should be comparable but it could be a lot safer and more enjoyable for them. They might even consider looking across the river in South Jersey. There are a number of towns (pretty much anywhere but Camden) that are very nice and a lot cheaper than in Pennsylvania, yet still have the convenience of being just a short trip away. Others I moved from Upper Darby over ten years ago, I understand it's gone down hill since then. It is a city of about 100,000 and has excellent public transportation. You can be in downtown Philadelphia in 30 minutes. There are rough neighborhoods and some pretty expensive ones like Aronimink where houses go around half million. Good Schools, public and private Jim croce and Tina Fey went to Upper Darby high Depends on where you go Some nieghborhoods there are good Upper Darby is certainly declining. It isn't a city but close enough to public transportation so that you are minutes away from Center City Philadelphia. I live in one of the safest parts of Upper Darby, but it is definitly going downhill, and we're trying to get out. I definitly agree that Aronimink area is probably the best. You can basically get around everywhere without a car no problem, and there's alot of public transportation that is easily accessible. |
