I have 5 hours to get a philly cheese steak? |
Travel Info I will be connecting from a International flight and have a 5 hour layover in PHL. Where is the nearest place to get a "real" Philly Cheese Steak? Also, how do I get there? I know there is a rail system that stops at the airport, I plan on using that. I will be there on a Saturday afternoon. Also, when I am arrive in PHL, I will be switching terminals, are the terminals connected? Travel Tips Most visitors only hear about Geno's, Pat's or Jim's, but actually there are a lot of places in town where you can get a good Philly cheesesteak. Plus, the local transit system (SEPTA) is not "user-friendly" with traveling quickly to Geno's, Pat's or Jim's. None of them are in walking distance to a rail station. If you're looking for a quick Philly experience and a good sandwich, then the Reading Terminal is the place to go. Take the R1 from the airport to Market East (only 3 or 4 stops from the airport). The Reading Terminal is located at 12th & Filbert, which is close to the train station. Ask for directions. Travel suggestions: Check the train schedules and carefully plan your route. See if you can do your Philly excursion in 3 hours just to be safe. Buy your tickets on the train. It costs extra, but it's easier than dealing with long lines and the ticket machines. What about your luggage? I don't think you can store it at the airport. Pre-check it maybe? I don't have any other suggestions. BUT DO NOT go to Reading Terminal with lots of bags or big luggage! It just won't work, dude. The Market East station is very confusing, b/c a lot of different trains travel on the same track. Make sure you know where to find the R1 back to the airport. Just to be safe, have $25 cash for a taxi cab back to the airport in case you miss your train or run out of time. If your heart is set on Geno's or Pat's or Jim's, then plan to take a cab-- $25 each way. I'm sure you can get a cab driver to take you round-trip if you work out a price at the aiport and pay in cash. Whatever you do, don't travel by SEPTA busses. They're crowded, slow and unpredictable. Last resort: If you're limited on money and time, then just get a cheesteak at the airport. The airport employees can point you toward the best sandwich vendor. Pick up the City Weekly or Philadelphia magazine, too. Okay...I know it won't be a truly authentic "Philly experience". But, whenever you have to travel long distance, I think hassle-free convenience is the best experience! Have a good trip! Others well you know it's gotta be either pats or genos... GENOS!!! or PATS!!! If u only have 5 hours and u want a good sandwich, I'd take a cab to Geno's at 5th and Passyunk. Trying to take the subway from the airport, make it back in time, AND switch terminals (security), you'd be cutting it close. There are, however, decent places in South Philly to get a steak and a cabby might help you with that, but, definitely Jim's on South Street, Pats or Genos at 5th and Passyunk. mmmm...get me one too! extra cheese, onions, mushrooms and a little bit of ketchup... thanks dude. pats is the way to go... its off of 9th street... on Wharton St train has 2 stops in the airport and the terminals are all around the stations and are called out and well signposted and well within easy walking distance of each other |
