Q: Why do they call Scranton Pennsylivania the Armpit of America ? Does anyone know !

I guess since a long time ago the Scranton area was a thriving coal mining area. Since the industry of coal declined the enconomy has dropped in that area and has become a less desireable area to live in.

Scranton is about 45 minutes from me. Like Allentown PA it is filled with rusty abandoned steel mills made of brick and steel. No one has the money to raze them
Scranton just straight up SUCKS. There really is nothing to do unless you drink.It was once a major city in Pennsylvania but now there are no jobs. Most professionals commute to larger cities. I don't think I would call it an armpit because there are alot worse places to be but it is pretty much depressing.
Maybe "they" haven't been to Camden, NJ.
