Going to Philadelphia in September. What to see? |
Travel Info We are going mainly for the King Tut exhibit. We have a B&B booked 7 miles outside the city called 12 Chimneys and plan on taking the subway in. Good idea? Easy to do? We plan on seeing the Zoo, the Franklin Institute of course, some of the historical sites and an arborteum at the college. Oh, and the aquarium in Camden, NJ. Any other suggestions? Any tips? Travel Tips The Subway, do you mean the Broad Street Subway or the El? Around this time everything starts to die down to the moderate stuff, its usually really hyper around 4th of July. The Mutter Museum if you want to see weird things like a lady who's body turned into soap. 30th Street Station is a good place to go for like, a bite to eat. The Zoo, possibly the first Zoo ever. King of Prussia Mall - the biggest mall on the east coast, its about 10-20 a-miles away from the City. Granite Run/Springfield Mall - In the suburbs of Philadelphia, small malls though, also has a theatre(near Granite Run) 69th Street Shops - across the 69th Street bridge there is a string of different shops and eateries and a theatre, they're mainly chain stores and cheap, discount stores. The Art Museum - A Don't miss! This has different kinds of exhibits every now and then, free on Sunday mornings. Site of Live 8 USA. The Liberty Bell - Self explanatory, all there is is people talking about the history of the bell and a person taps it and thats about it. Independence Hall City Hall - Where the mayor lives, people take pictures of this all the time. William Penn sits at the top. One, Two, and Three Liberty Place - Notice those 3 tall buildings in the skyline? (Not the REALLY tall one off to the side where I believe they are building apartments) That's them. Horse and Buggy Ride - At 5th street, you get a tour of the lower side of the city with either a friend or a lover with a dude talking to you about the city and riding a horse. Ride The Ducks - Get a kazoo sounding thing and thats about it. Penn's Landing - William Penn landed here. In the summer there is a whole lot of things to do, like a concert on the waterfront every now and then, September is more like the winding down thing, theres nothing there except for vendors with hot dogs and funnel cakes. Also, the fabolous Spirit of Philadelphia is there. South Street - not too far from Penn's Landing, lots and lots of different stores, you can find the most obscene and the most beautiful things here. Old(e) City - Also another district for clothes and shirts, mainly some who have gotten enough of South Street's hustle and bustle. Avenue of the Arts - Theatres are here, also some shopping districts. Some shows don't cost as much as some other shows. The Gallery At Market East (simply called 'The Gallery') - Not an art exhibit, but mainly a medium-sized mall. Closes really early in the day (8:00 I believe) also a batch of trains are over there, which you possibly dont want to take unless if you really need to go to their destinations. Chinatown - within walking distance from the Gallery. Mainly alot of Supermarkets, Restaurants, and Pastry Shops. Tomb of the Unknown Soldier - Yeah, we have our very own unknown soldier, I forgot where it is though. Rittenhouse Square - Just a plain old park. Not that much going on. Mainly people are sitting around and either reading or studying or taking their dog out for a walk. Chestnut Hill - one of the few pretty neighbourhoods around Philadelphia, pretty optional. Pattison(Stadiums) - You can go here if you want to see a concert or to see a Phillies Game, I think the Eagles will be starting up around this time and the 76ers if you care to see them. The Shore - You can go take NJ Transit over to Atlantic City or Wildwood if you want to, but if you are on a budget only for just the city, dont go. Walking Tours - If you want to, you can go take a walking tour of the city. Trolley Tours - another option. That's all I can think of, there might be more of attractions around...but here are some tips Yes, we have a Gay Scene. They are mainly around 11th and 13th Streets so if you feel like going to the Gayborhood, go ahead. Avoid NE Philly, not all of it is bad, but certain parts are. We also have a Punk Scene as well, but its mainly closely knit. Source(s): I take occasional visits to Philadelphia(since Philly isnt that far away from me). Other Travel Tips Aquarium is not that great...skip it and see some more of the sights in Phila. The zoo is pretty decent. Do a Trolley tour, they are very informative and will give you an idea of where you would like to go back and visit. There are great places to eat. Try Buddakhan, you will love it! The Constitution Center is pretty good for about one or two hours if you like history. There's like a few streets for historic Philadelphia e.g. Independence Hall, the Quaker church, print shop... Near the Franklin Institute is the art museum. Hint: It's free on Sundays. The Academy of Natural Sciences on the Parkway, very near the Franklin Institute, is also fun. Also in that area is Eastern State Penitentiary, the first "modern" penitentiary in the country. It is now considered to be a preserved ruin and it is really fun and spooky. Take a short trip up the Schuylkill to Manayunk and take a walk on Main Street. There is great shopping, restaurants, bars, live music clubs and so on. If you like bicycling, take a ride on the Schuylkill River Trail. It runs from South Street in downtown Philly out to Valley Forge and beyond. Have dinner at the Waterworks Restaurant - it sits right below the Art Museum on the Schuylkill and the setting is amazing (I have not eaten there, so I can't vouch for the food). By the way, the Art Museum has a great Sunday morning brunch. If you have a chance... And don't ignore the Old City and Penn's Landing areas. Plenty to do and see there. And South Street, from the Old City out to about 6th Street - especially on a weekend evening, it is a great time to just wander around. I don't know the location of the 12 Chimneys. The only web link I could find was for one located in Kyrgyzstan, which is not hardly a Philly suburb, so I can't really say anything about your plan to come into town via the subway. Have fun! http://www.ansp.org/ http://www.easternstate.org/ http://www.manayunk.com/ http://www.schuylkillriver.org/detail.as... Italian Market, Phillies Game, Liberty Bell, South Street |
