Best place to live in Philadelphia for young family? |
Travel Info We will be a mid to late 20's family with one kid and one dog relocating from FT. Benning, Ga. to Philly area. Wife is an accountant, I will seek employment with the PhillyPD. Looking for a place that is relatively safe, good schools, house prices that match our jobs, backyard would be nice. Any help would be appreciated. Travel Tips The people that are answering this question are not reading it. If you are going to apply to the Philly PD, and you are accepted into the Academy, you cannot live outside of Philadelphia. Most City jobs (PGW, PWD, PHA, Fire, Police, Streets) have residency restrictions that require you to live in the City to work for the City. There are several "family" friendly ares in Philadelphia. Some of those areas include: Mt. Airy, Chestnut Hill (a little pricey), Northeast, some parts of South Philly, some parts of North Philly, some parts of Center City (pricey). Do a little research and if you can, do a few site visits. Good luck and welcome to Philly! Others My suggestion would be to not live in the city because any place thats relatively safe is also very expensive. Your best bet is a suburb. There are plenty of nice ones surrounding Philly. I agree I don't know what your budget is but I pay $700 for a studio in South Philly which is one of the less expensive areas. I've looked into real estate and you can get into a decent neighborhood for cheap if your willing to buy a house that needs a little TLC. + parochial schools are pretty much a necessity if you want your kid to have a decent education nowadays If your looking for decent areas I would look at South Philly or Northeast Philly, they'd be the nicest for least money. just fyi Lower Merion close to Philly and one of the best school districts in the country. www.prufoxroach.com to search for homes Not inexpensive, but you will never have to move, and your house price will always increase in value and it looks like you have pretty good jobs and could afford a home here. You can also seek employment with the Lower Merion PD. Dangerous crime is few and far between, and Philadelphia has gotten very dangerous lately. There are some incredible neighborhoods in Philadelphia. If you're looking for outdoor space, I would highly recommend the East Falls area. It is convenient to downtown, the Art Museum, parks, the Main Line, and Manayunk. You might also be interested in the Northeast, which offers a more suburban feel in some neighborhoods. Other great areas are the Girard Estates and Whitman sections of South Philadelphia, or if you want to be a little closer to center city, Pennsport is a great neighborhood for people your age. All of these neighborhoods offer housing to suit a wide range of budgets. One suggestion I have before purchasing a home in any neighborhood is going there at night to make sure you will feel safe living there. Good luck and welcome to Philadelphia! My nephew is a law student At Villanova and has an apartment in Conshohocken. Its a neat place, lots of parks, churches, restaurants. Close to Phila and the King of Prussia Mall. If you visit Conshohocken, make sure you visit the Freeman Nut Co. on Hector Street. They make their own peanut butter and offer every kind of candy possible. If you like Mexican food, the Coyote Crossing is great BUT PRICEY($22 for taco dinner, $9.50 for margarita) Best of Luck on your new home and jobs.We live 2 hours away in Wilkes Barre. My family all lives in NE Philly and it's a nice, safe area. The best schools up there are the parochial. Many of the houses have decent yards as well. |
