oak creek canyon is awesome and not too far from the valley (about 2 hours north).

i've lived in the valley since i was a little kid and we used to always camp there w/my family. i'm now 28 and my boyfriend,my kids and i have been to oak creek several times each spring/summer and it's so much fun. there are several campgrounds for you to check out (some are right next to the creek) and they run anywhere from 7-14 bucks per night. there are several trails to hike too-my favorite being west fork trail # 108 and in the summer-slide rock is fun to check out.

christopher creek is a cool place too-it's located in payson which is about 1.5 hours north of the valley

flagstaff is another cool place to check out-tons of campgrounds. it's about 2.5 hours north of the valley.

I think a great place to camp at Prescott is the Lynx Lake campground. I was just there last week. It was so nicely kept up (of course, it just opened for the season...) This area is among tall pines. Campsites don't have a view of the lake, but the pine trees themselves are beautiful. There is boating allowed on the lake, but no swimming. In addition to being very beautiful, it's also close to town. (Shopping! Movies!)

The way to Lynx Lake is marked by a sign from Hwy 69. (It helps if you know where the attractive Prescott mall is located, because the entry road to Lynx Lake is about a mile from the mall.)

Over on Hwy 89, the White Spar campground (of the Prescott National Forest) was looking pretty scraggly last week. Maybe once camping season gets underway, they'll take better care of it, but I wouldn't recommend White Spar for now.
Here's the link to the Prescott National Forest's camping page: http://www.fs.fed.us/r3/prescott/recreat...
Go to Oak creek canyon, near Sedona Arizona. Theres also slide rock or you can even go to recreation.gov and find something closer.
