Will be driving from Phoenix to Sedona beginning of next March, what should we make sure we see on the way?

Travel Info
My 5 sisters and I are planning a get away next March to celebrate some of us turning 50 recently or in the near future. No husbands or kids, just us girls. Looking for any "gotta see" things on the drive from Phoenix to Sedona. We are from Ohio and have never been there.

Travel Tips
There isn't a whole lot between Phoenix and Sedona, but here are a few things you'll pass that may be of interest.

If you take I-17 north to the Sedona exit there are a few things. First, Montezuma's Castle off of I-17 is nice and worth the stop; I would recommend that. The Bumblebee Pass again from I-17 and drive up the mountain is interesting as you pass some old mines along Crown King road up to Cleator. Another option, you can even make a stop at Sunset Point for a pretty good view.

My recommendation is to take I-17 north almost all the way to Flagstaff, then take 89a from Flag down into Sedona. The views during that drive are amazing. You'll come down through the canyon into Sedona, passing Oak Creek Canyon and slide rock. Its a great drive and perfect way to enter Sedona. When you leave Sedona, rather than getting back on I-17 south back to Phoenix, continue on 89a south through Cottonwood and up the mountain to Jerome. Its an old mining town with some crazy zig-zag streets at the peak of the mountain. Its got a nice view over the red rock valley of Sedona. There are a couple taverns there where you can have a cold one. You can continue on 89 into Prescott (former capital of the state) and stop at Whiskey Row. From Prescott, just head back into Phoenix.

I've taken many friends / family that have visited on that trip (I-17 towards Flag with stop at Montezuma, then 89a back south through Sedona) several times and all have really enjoyed it. You might even consider getting to the Grand Canyon as well. Its about an hour north of Flagstaff (an hour and a half from the I-17 / 89a interchange) and can be accessed pretty easy.

Good luck on your planning and on your trip. Enjoy AZ!
Others
Not a lot to stop at along that road. The only big thing that comes to mind is Out of Africa Wildlife Park. If you enjoy big cats and savanna animals up close, that would be a good stop for an afternoon. In Sedona, if you ladies are feeling adventurous, go for a Pink Jeep Tour into the mountains and take part in one of the sundown cookouts. There are also some Indian ruins in the Sedona area if you are into that (Tonopah?). Not too far outside of the Phoenix limits, there is also the Casino and the Anthem Outlet Shops.
They are right there isn't a lot to see along the way, but I would recommend a stop in Black Canyon City and have a slice of the world's best pie at Rock Springs Cafe. They have absolutely the best pie and meringue that is like 6 inches high. Sunset Point is very pretty...for desert landscapes. Be careful if you do the Crown King road, it is narrow, bumpy and at times downright shakes your car to pieces...it's a great trip but more appropriate for ATV's. Once you get to Sedona the area is so beautiful that you will find plenty to do..Jerome is a beautiful place, Cottonwood and Mingus are a nice drive and of course you can't miss Oak Creek Canyon. If you get the opportunity, visit Montezuma's Castle it's fascinating but won't take you all day. You could also take the train from Clarkdale. There is so much to do in the area...enjoy your stay and "Happy Birthday"
